warm wall - great fruit

THE VEG WALLS ARE NOT ONLY WONDERFUL VISUAL BACKDROPS FOR GROWING FRUIT, THE WARMTH AND PROTECTION THEY SUPPLY HELP PRODUCE DELICIOUS FRUIT. THESE GLORIOUS PEARS WERE ENJOYED FRESH IN THE SEASON WITH BINHAM BLUE AND GARDEN HERBS AS CANAPEES - AND AS SECRET, STOLEN SNACKS ON GARDEN WALKS… NOW FOR OUR FAMILY CHRISTMAS GATHERING WE WILL ENJOY THEM LIGHTLY POACHED (FROM THE FREEZER) – THEY EAT BEAUTIFULLY WHEN WARMED IN THE AGA AND SERVED WITH SPICED, MASCARPONE CRÈME FRECHE, OR FOR BREAKFAST IN PEAR AND APPLE COMPOTE, OR DESERT IN PEAR AND ALMOND TART…IT’S A TREAT TO BE EATING OUR OWN PRODUCE FOR CHRISTMAS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS – AND MAKES CELEBRATING EVEN MORE SPECIAL.

THE GARDEN INSPIRES DECORATING THE HALL...

NOT ONLY THE HOLIDAYS INSPIRE DECORATIONS HERE. THE DEATH OF AN ESPALIEED, GARDEN, PEAR TREE (OVER 100 YEARS OLD) CAN CREATE A GREAT REASON FOR THE OUTSIDE TO COME IN. HERE THE TEAM BRINGS THE PEAR TREE INTO THE ENTRANCE HALL TO A POSITION OF PERMANENT DISPLAY. THOUGH CAREFULLY MEASURED, THE TEAM INSISTED IT WOULD NOT FIT.  ONLY 4 INCHES OF A SINGLE, SMALL BRANCH WAS TRIMMED FOR ENTRY.

MEMORIES OF DEAR ZELDA - HEAD-GIRL OF THE FLOCK

ZELDA SADLY DIED THIS AUTUMN, PEACEFULLY, IN THE FRONT PADDOCK, ON A SUNNY DAY, WITH HER HEAD RESTING ON J'S LAP... SHE WAS 18 AND HAD RETIRED YEARS AGO TO BECOME THE HEAD-GIRL AND FLOCK LEADER. SHE WAS ALWAYS CHEEKY, TAUGHT THE OTHERS ALL HER TRICKS AND WAS A BELOVED, BEST FRIEND. TO HELP HER THROUGH LAST WINTER WE HAD A COAT MADE FOR HER AS HER ARTHRITIS WAS BRINGING HER DOWN. IT REALLY IMPROVED HER LIFE AND SHE STAYED WARM AND TOASTY ALL WINTER TO LEAD THE FLOCK THROUGH YET ANOTHER SUMMER. HER OFF-SPRING REMAIN IN THE FLOCK AND HER CHEEKY PERSONALITY LIVES ON…
